What is dental sedation?
Dental sedation is a way to make you feel relaxed and remain conscious during a dental procedure. If you’re nervous about having treatment, it allows you to go ahead without any distress or anxiety.
Patients from Redland, Southville, Clifton, Westbury Park, Montpelier, Cotham, Easton, Kingsdown, Redcliffe, Henleaze, Bishopston and throughout Bristol may choose to have dental sedation if the patient:
- Has a dental phobia or is highly nervous at dental appointments
- Is looking to have extensive dental work or a complex procedure
- Is having a dental treatment which will cause discomfort
- Has a strong gag reflex
- Is uncomfortable with the sounds or smells in a dental practice
At Dental Touch in Bristol, we offer intravenous (IV) sedation. This safe and effective procedure is where a sedative is injected directly into your vein.
You won’t go to sleep with the IV sedation, but it will make you feel extremely relaxed and sleepy. You will be able to respond to your dentist, but you will be unaware about what happens during the dental procedure. After the event you will have little or no memory about what has happened.

How does dental IV sedation in Bristol work?
Consultation and consent
Before we can administer the IV sedation, we will have a consultation to discuss the process, talk through how to prepare for the sedation appointment and what you will need to do after sedation. We are also required by law to obtain your consent for IV sedation. Our team will talk through all the risks and benefits of dental sedation. Please do ask questions if there’s anything you’re unsure about.
IV sedation appointment
On the day of your dental sedation appointment, you will need to have a trusted adult chaperone with you who can drive you home. You should not eat or drink 6-8 hours before your sedation appointment.
A thin tube is inserted either into a vein on the back of your hand or into your arm. A drug is then injected through the tube, and you will soon feel very sleepy. Your dentist will then carry out your dental treatment and you will have no anxiety or awareness of what is happening.
During the process, your oxygen, pulse and blood pressure are monitored. How long you remain sedated for will depend upon the type of dental treatment that you are having.
After sedation
You will feel sleepy for at least an hour after the procedure. You will need to be escorted home and looked after. You should not drive or ride a bike or motorbike. You should also avoid drinking alcohol and using any machinery for the next 24 hours.
